Your New Intern Reporting for Duty!

Greetings to you dear patrons of SLFL!

My name is Val Macias and I shall be your intern throughout the winter and most of the spring season. I'll go ahead and tell you a little about myself. Currently, like many interns before me, I am a student at the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama. I expect to graduate in August of 2014 with a Masters in Library and Information Science--the stuff needed to be a full librarian. I also have an MA in Education (single subject English teaching) and a BA in Literature, both from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I hope to make the transition in the near future from instructor, to instructional librarian.

At the moment I am currently living in Seoul, South Korea, and I have been doing so for the past 10 years. However, Ontario, California is the place I call "home." I came to Korea at the end of 2003 and I have pretty much stayed here since. I am an instructor of ESL composition and presentation at Sungkyunkwan University, the oldest extant university in East Asia. While I have held many teaching posts in Korea, I've been at this last post since 2007.

While in Korea, I met my wife in 2005, whom I later married in 2007 and have two robust little boys (ages 5 and 18 months respectively). In addition to being a family man, other things I really enjoy doing include reading nonfiction, DSLR photography, traveling (been to 15 countries so far) and I am teaching myself to code when I have a minute here and there. So to sum up, I live and work in Korea, call California "home," study in Alabama and intern in New York. Even though I am all over the place, I hope to be a great service to you. Ask me anything anytime and I can respond to you through the comments box.
